Mobile Device Management (MDM) is a component of Enterprise Mobility Managements (EMM). Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM). MDM is the basic management and control of mobile devices. These features are also included by an EMM, which can additionally manage apps and content on mobile devices. MobiVisor is an EMM from a functional point of view, but since the term is not widely used, we often refer to it as MDM.

What is the added value of an MDM for my company?

An MDM secures corporate devices and data. You don’t have to worry anymore when a device and the data stored on it is lost. MDM is a great relief for administrators, as the devices can be centrally managed and controlled remotely. The devices can also be remotely updated, which saves administrators a lot of time. If an error occurs, it can also be fixed remotely. In addition, you can increase the labor productivity of your employees. For example, you may prohibit the use of social media apps on corporate devices during working hours.

All questions about Data Security

Can company data be stored on servers of providers from the USA?

As soon as business data is stored on mobile devices, the Federal Data Protection Act applies. It only allows the storage of personal data outside the EU if the services have been certified in accordance with the “EU-US Privacy Shield” by the US Department of Commerce. However, since the certificates do not apply to all data types and business areas, it is important to check the Privacy Shield certificate of the US provider. Attention: US authorities can also access your stored data from certified companies. To prevent this, MobiVisor runs exclusively on German servers.

Why should data be separated on mobile devices? What’s the problem?

Regardless of the vendor, mobile devices have two major vulnerabilities: the vendor account (Google, Apple or Microsoft) and the installed apps. If business personal data such as contacts or emails are stored on the account, this is a violation of the Federal Data Protection Act! In addition, US authorities may have access to the data. The same applies to apps: By accessing the address book, for example, business data can be passed on to other companies. Data separation keeps your business data secure and other companies do not have access.

Is it not enough to restrict the access of the apps?

Mobile operating systems can now control app access. So far, however, there is only the option to block or grant access completely. For example, if you want to use WhatsApp privately and give access to your contacts, the app also receives all your business contacts. Due to our data separation, each app only has access to the data in the respective container. Is WhatsApp installed e. g. in a private container with access to private contacts, all company contacts still remain protected.

My smartphone is managed by the company but private usage is permitted. Do I have restrictions on the private area?

No, no way! Due to the clear separation of the containers, the company does not have access to private data. If in company guidelines e. g. the ban on social media is defined, this applies exclusively to the corporate sector on the smartphone. There are no restrictions in the private container.

For which companies is this container-principle suitable?

Protecting company data is important for all companies in all industries to remain compliant with data protection. The principle is particularly suitable for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), CYOD (Choose Your Own Device) and COPE (Company Owned Privately Enabled) concepts. In short: For all companies whose employees use a smartphone for business and private purposes.

What happens if a device without MDM is lost?

Once customer or company data is stored on the lost device, it becomes very unpleasant for companies. All persons and customers whose data have (potentially) fallen into the wrong hands must be informed immediately of the loss. This can lead to significant damage to image and reputation, compensation payments and distrust. So: Better secure your mobile devices with MobiVisor!
